A LITTLE HISTORY WITH YOUR SLICE OF PIE

Every tradition has a story.

We've got the food, the Friendsgiving plans and the local events covered. Curious how Thanksgiving became the holiday we know? There's a thoughtful, sourced history right here, too. No schoolbook shortcuts.

1621A HARVEST GATHERING
1863LINCOLN'S PROCLAMATION
1941THE FOURTH THURSDAY
1970NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING
Read the complete factual story

The 1621 gathering, the Wampanoag, the making of a national holiday, and the traditions we recognize today.

For many Americans, Thanksgiving means family, friends, food, football, and a moment to appreciate what we have. But the familiar story of Pilgrims and Native Americans sitting down for the “first Thanksgiving” leaves out much of the history.

01 / BEFORE THE FEASTThe story began before 1621.

Long before European settlers arrived, Indigenous peoples throughout North America observed their own ceremonies of gratitude and harvest. English communities also marked religious days of thanksgiving and seasonal harvest celebrations. Neither people nor tradition began with the Mayflower. [1]

When the Mayflower colonists arrived in 1620, they settled at Patuxet, within the homeland of the Wampanoag. The region had experienced devastating epidemics and growing European contact. The Wampanoag were established communities with their own political relationships, agriculture, and history. [2]

Wampanoag leader Ousamequin, whom the English called Massasoit, approached the newcomers with strategic interests of his own. An alliance could offer protection amid competing pressures. This was diplomacy, not simply a story of strangers generously rescuing strangers. [2]

HISTORY NOTE

The Wampanoag lived in this region for thousands of years before the English colony. Their history did not begin when the settlers arrived.

Source: Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian

02 / THE HARVESTWhat actually happened in 1621?

In the autumn of 1621, the Plymouth colonists celebrated a successful harvest. Ousamequin joined the gathering with approximately 90 Wampanoag men. The Wampanoag and colonists shared three days of feasting and activities. [3]

The best-known eyewitness description comes from colonist Edward Winslow. His account mentions the colonists hunting wildfowl and Wampanoag participants bringing five deer. It does not supply a complete dinner menu or describe the familiar modern holiday table. [4]

What about the turkey? Wild turkeys were present in the area, but the surviving account does not establish that roast turkey was served at that particular gathering. Mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie, and the other familiar sides were not documented as part of the feast. [5]

WHAT IS DOCUMENTED, AND WHAT ISN'T

DOCUMENTED90 Wampanoag men · three days · wildfowl · five deer
NOT CONFIRMEDAn invitation, the full menu, and why the Wampanoag arrived

Only two surviving English-written primary accounts describe the harvest season. They do not preserve the participants' Wampanoag perspectives. Historians therefore distinguish between the evidence and later retellings. [4]

03 / A NATIONAL TRADITIONHow did Thanksgiving become a holiday?

The gathering in 1621 did not immediately launch an annual nationwide celebration. Different communities had long observed days of thanks for different reasons. President George Washington proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1789, and subsequent observances did not yet follow a single fixed national schedule. [6]

In the nineteenth century, writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for a shared national celebration. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of thanksgiving for the last Thursday of November, asking Americans to reflect on gratitude and national healing during enormous suffering and division. [7]

The calendar still changed. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the observance amid concerns about the holiday shopping season, producing disagreement among states. In 1941, Congress settled on the fourth Thursday in November, and Roosevelt signed the measure into law. [6]

Turkey dinners, parades, football games, Black Friday shopping, and today's Friendsgiving gatherings became associated with the holiday over time. The holiday we celebrate is a layered American tradition, not a direct reenactment of 1621. [7]

04 / WHAT THE MYTH MISSESThe history doesn't end with a shared meal.

The peaceful 1621 gathering was not the end of relations between Indigenous peoples and European colonists. Colonization brought displacement, warfare, loss of land, and immense suffering to Native communities. Leaving that history out turns a complicated past into a comforting story that is incomplete. [2]

For that reason, Thanksgiving does not mean the same thing to everyone. Since 1970, Indigenous people and allies have gathered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, for the National Day of Mourning, honoring Indigenous ancestors, resilience, and experiences often omitted from mainstream Thanksgiving accounts. [8]

This is not to suggest that all Native people observe the day in the same way. Indigenous communities also continue their own traditions of gratitude, family, and gathering. Their living perspectives deserve to be part of any accurate conversation about the holiday. [1]

05 / THE TRADITION TODAYWhat tradition can mean now.

Thanksgiving can still be a meaningful day of gratitude, generosity, and connection without pretending its history was simpler than it was.

Families can share dinner. Friends can gather for Friendsgiving. Neighbors can organize food drives, offer a free meal, or make sure someone has a place at the table.

THE TAKEAWAY

The tradition doesn't require forgetting the past.

We can appreciate what Thanksgiving means to us today while being truthful about how we got here.

FRIENDSGIVING · THE CHOSEN-FAMILY TABLE

Good friends. Great food. Questionable planning.

Friendsgiving is a relaxed Thanksgiving-season get-together friends schedule around family plans. Share food, enjoy drinks or alcohol-free favorites, put football on, browse holiday sales, and have an easy afternoon or evening without racing between households. Pick a day that works for everyone. Potluck, pizza or snacks all count.

Host's shortcut: Set a serving time, label dishes with common allergens, provide a few take-home containers, and keep perishable food from sitting out for more than two hours. The only surprise should be who brings a second green-bean casserole.

Theme: relaxed neighborhood café meets a potluck organized by seven people who all thought somebody else was bringing plates.

THE NAME-DRAWING DEPARTMENT

Gift exchange, without the spreadsheet feud.

Draw a gift circle and assign potluck dishes. Your names and assignments stay in this browser session; nothing is submitted or stored on our servers. The organizer sees all the pairings.

🎁 Secret-ish gift swap

Use at least 3 unique names for a no-self-assignment circle. Agree on a budget before drawing.

Only send each participant their own result. Drawing again reshuffles everybody.

🥘 Potluck delegation

Do not arrive with six jars of olives and a Bluetooth speaker and call that “contributing.”

Use the same names for a sample dish lineup. Confirm allergies, equipment, and who is actually attending.

The house rules

Set a budget, allow homemade gifts, and don't make anybody explain why they didn't buy a luxury candle.

$20-and-under surprise swap

NOVEMBER 27 · THE DAY AFTER

Black Friday. Beige cardigan optional.

Everyone is cozy until a television drops 17% and your cousin starts comparative financing at dessert. Here is the antidote.

01 · The 24-hour rule

If it wasn't on yesterday's list, give it a whole day to stop feeling like destiny. A countdown timer is not a personality test.

Budget first. Browser tab second.

02 · Verify the “deal”

Compare final prices, model numbers, warranties and returns before placing an order.

No invented discounts on this page.

03 · Shop local Saturday

November 28 is Small Business Saturday. Give Story County shops and makers a real chance.

Your neighborhood belongs at the table.

The pre-checkout truce

NINE SQUARES · ZERO JUDGMENT

Family dinner bingo.

Tap the inevitable moments as they happen. At least one square is legally required to involve gravy.

THE GOOD-NATURED HOUSE RULES

Laugh together. Not at the guest.

Family fights are funny in a story, less fun at the table. The joke is the chaos, not anyone's identity or private situation.

Host idea: no debates before pie, a leftover station, and one music playlist nobody is permitted to commandeer.

De-escalation strategy: more rolls 🍞
